“That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been.”
-Charles Dickens, Great Expectations
Every day shapes how our lives would turn out, even ever so slightly. But everyone has that one life-changing event that really brought us to where we are today. It can be as simple as the college we go to or as dramatic as a near-death experience. Mine was somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.
If I had to pick one day that changed my life, it would be March 28, 2003.
Fifteen years ago, I hopped on a plan and flew from China to permanently live in the U.S. To this day, I remember being on that 14-hour flight and wondering whether I was dreaming. “Maybe I’ll wake up soon and I’ll be in my bed on the ground.”
Of course, I’m so grateful it wasn’t a dream. Despite the struggles of learning a new language and fitting into a new culture, moving to the U.S. made my life better. I wouldn’t have met my seventh grade English teacher who made me fall in love with literature; I wouldn’t have joined journalism in high school, which further fostered my love for writing; and I wouldn’t be graduating from one of the best universities in the U.S. in less than one and a half months. I definitely wouldn’t have met the wonderful friends I have now or have the idea to start this blog.
It’s amazing how one event could change the course that our lives go. But I wouldn’t have my life any other way.
What is your life changing event?
